Silent Suffering: Advocating for Male Victims of Sexual Harassment in India

Sexual harassment of men, though less commonly discussed, is a pressing concern in Indian society. The prevalent belief that only women can be victims of sexual harassment exacerbates the difficulty for men to come forward, often labeling them as “weak” or undermining their masculinity. The POSH Act, designed to protect women at workplaces, inadvertently highlights this bias, offering no equivalent protection for men, despite their vulnerability to similar abuses.

Statistics reveal a troubling picture: a National Commission for Women study reported a significant rise in sexual harassment cases against men from 2021 to 2022, and surveys by reputable organizations like the Centre for Civil Society and the Economic Times indicate that a notable percentage of men have faced coercion in intimate relations or harassment by female colleagues. These numbers, however, likely understate the issue, as societal stigma deters many men from reporting their experiences.

This societal stigma is rooted deeply in traditional gender roles, reinforced by legal frameworks that only recognize men as perpetrators, not victims. The Indian Penal Code and the Supreme Court’s definitions of sexual crimes reflect these biases, often excluding men from the narratives of harassment and assault victims.

Internationally, many countries have adopted gender-neutral laws to address sexual harassment, recognizing the need to protect all individuals irrespective of gender. Yet, in India, legislative efforts to extend these protections to men have been met with resistance, despite increasing awareness and documented incidents in various settings, including prisons.

The need for change is clear. India must reform its laws to offer equal protection to all victims of sexual harassment, fostering a more equitable society. Breaking down prejudices, initiating open discussions about male victimization, and enacting legislative reforms are essential steps towards achieving justice for all victims, ensuring a safer, more inclusive environment for every member of society.
